Art and Design
Art and Design at Wickhambreaux
Art and Design is essentially concerned with the way we respond to, understand, interpret and shape our world through senses and emotions.
Subject Leader Profile
Ms Brewster
Ms Brewster has an appreciation for art, and enjoys visiting galleries across Europe.
Ms Brewster believes that art is a valuable medium for self-expression and exploration, and through it, pupils can discover new aspects of themselves and communicate these in creative ways. She believes that, through artistic expression, children can learn about themselves, and convey their emotions and ideas in a safe and imaginative manner.
Through art and design, children at Wickhambreaux are encouraged to express themselves creatively, adapt and modify their ideas and embrace flexibility of thought and action through the creative process. This helps to foster risk taking and resilience, and assists pupils in their transformation into innovative and adaptable artists.
Vision Statement
“A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, quipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.”
At Wickhambreaux, we have designed our curriculum around our core intent: to provide children with a high-quality art and design educational experience.
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”
Pablo Picasso
Children will be encouraged to experiment with a range of media, styles and subjects, using the work of established artists to inspire their own work and exemplify skills and techniques they can use to create their own artistic pieces, expressing their views and emotions through art.
We have examined the progression of knowledge and skills, and plan lessons and activities carefully, building upon prior learning and considering next steps to ensure all children can achieve, progress and learn.
We believe the impact of high-quality art and design curriculum can be seen throughout and beyond children’s time at Wickhambreaux; via the development and application of key life skills, including creative thinking, risk-taking and experimenting, delivering and responding to critique and mistakes. We provide a safe and supportive environment, where the children are encouraged to be constructively critical of their own work and the work of others, including their peers and established artists. We build resilience by encouraging children to view mistakes and errors as opportunities for development and improvement, encouraging experimentation and fostering creativity.
Our core school values of love, trust and community underpin this ethos.
“We don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents.”
