Chestnut Class
Welcome to Chestnut Class
Mr Beard (class teacher)
Mrs Calder (TA)
Chestnut Class is home to our wonderful Year 2 children. Just like the strong and resilient chestnut tree, we will grow and thrive together, blossoming into our best selves.
We have an exciting curriculum which is detailed in the curriculum maps below. However, that is only the beginning; you will see our budding thespians performing in the annual Nativity play, performing dances from around the world, singing songs to deepen our learning about the Victorian era and much more.
In addition to the core subjects of Maths, English, Science and RE we are focusing on the following themes in the foundation subjects:
- In History, during the Autumn Term, we will be looking at explorers through the years and will end with a focus on Arctic explorers. The Summer Term will see us investigating change over a period of time and looking at life during Victorian England.
- In Geography, in the Spring Term, we will be learning about the continents and oceans of the world. We will also be comparing a traditional village in England to that of one in East Africa.
- Dance will be taught throughout the year and linked to class themes, class performances, such as the Nativity, or a significant school event. Team games, gymnastics, net and wall games, striking and fielding and athletics will be covered on a termly basis. Swimming is timetabled in Year 2 but is still dependent on the availability of local pools
- The computing curriculum will encompass the key skills of simple programming, handling data, e-safety, multimedia and will look at technology in our lives.
- Art and Design and Design Technology are very much linked to the other foundation subjects and most pieces will be of this cross curricular nature. However, the key skills and techniques in these subjects, such as colour, texture and pattern will be explored. As will the skills of designing, making and evaluating pieces.
- Music is discretely taught and will also link with the foundation subjects.
- We use the Jigsaw programme to deliver RSHE as well as enhancing the offer with relevant outside visitors.
- French is taught each week and builds on previously taught vocabulary, listening and speaking skills.
On this page you will find links to useful documents and resources that will give you an insight into the Year 2 curriculum. The unit overviews give a summary of the units of work that we cover over the year. You can also read our latest class news and see photos of what we've been getting up to.
Latest Class News
On Tuesday, the class joined the nationwide initiative for Anti-Bullying Week by sporting odd socks. Everyone participated with pride—except for me, but that’s a story for another day! This small gesture sparked meaningful conversations about individuality, kindness, and respect. It’s heart-warming to see the children embracing these values and celebrating what makes each of us unique.
Our nativity preparations are progressing beautifully. A read-through this week showed just how confident many children are with their lines already—such a joy to see! Parents and carers, your support at home with practicing lines is invaluable as we balance rehearsal time during our busy school weeks.
