Tropical Treats: Children Create Rainforest-Inspired Desserts for Local Restaurant
Cafe des Amis desserts
This term, Maple Class have been learning all about the tropical rainforests of South America.
Mr Russell, manager of Café des Amis (a fantastic Mexican and South American restaurant in Canterbury), heard about this and wanted to make use of the children's knowledge. He wrote to the class, inviting them to design and create a new dessert using tropical ingredients for the restaurant’s upcoming summer menu.
The children rose to the challenge, and after extensive market research, including a customer survey, they designed and made some fantastic desserts including cheesecakes, sundaes, waffles and churros, all using produce from South America such as mango, pineapple, passion fruit, coconut milk and dulce de leche.
Mr Russell was highly impressed by the children's culinary creations, praising their thoughtful presentation, use of diverse textures, and careful consideration of customer feedback from the survey.
The winning dessert (designed by Isabella, Lucas and Isobel) was a chocolate cake layered with coconut cream and roasted pineapple, topped with vanilla ice cream and drizzled with fresh passion fruit. Not only will they receive a menu with their dessert on, but Café des Amis has also generously provided each of them with a £25 voucher to enjoy a meal there with their families.
A huge thank you to Mr Russell and the team at Café des Amis for their enthusiasm and support for this project! Be sure to visit the restaurant this summer and try their delicious dishes for yourselves (Mrs Breeze recommends the duck fajitas!).
