Wickhambreaux Readers Meet Her Majesty Queen Camilla at Canterbury Library

Wickhambreaux Readers meet Queen Camilla at Canterbury Library

At Wickhambreaux CEPS we always give reading the highest priority and due to our school's continued excellent participation with the Kent Library Service's Summer Reading Challenge (we've won the 'Best School Award' for Canterbury, Villages and Coastal area AGAIN this year!), we were invited to take along a small group of children to a very special VIP event at Canterbury Library in the The Beaney Centre. Children who have either been keen SRC participants or have worked really hard with our school's various reading interventions to become even better readers, spent the morning carrying out several fascinating reading-based tasks within the children's section of the library, whilst they eagerly waited to meet our VIP.

Her Majesty Queen Camilla was visiting the Beaney Centre to unveil a new statue of Aphra Behn, who was the first female author and playwright to fully make her own living through writing.  Aphra was born in Canterbury, in 1640 and went on to write 19 plays and several ground-breaking novels.  Therefore it was fitting that Queen Camilla, who is patron of the National Literacy Trust and Booktrust, was the one to unveil Behn's new likeness.

After the unveiling, HM took a tour of the museum and library and spent some time speaking with our children about the importance of reading and about some of the children's favourite authors:  former Wickhambreaux teacher, Michael Morpurgo, proved a particular favourite!

It was an exciting day for all of us and particularly special through being linked so closely to our school's love and celebration of reading.
