RSHE at Wickhambreaux

At Wickhambreaux Church of England Primary School, we aim to provide a range of opportunities for children to develop themselves in a well-balanced way, beyond the academic and to move from childhood to adolescence with support and guidance to encourage both an awareness of others and the growth of responsible independence. Through this, we believe children can develop the confidence, talents and skills to become effective inpiduals, motivated learners and active citizens in Modern Britain.

We want to prepare our children for the future by encouraging the development of characteristics for life such as a love of learning, resilience, integrity, teamwork, critical thinking and independence. We want to prepare them for the world of work and support them in developing enterprise skills and financial awareness whilst fostering British Values underpinned by a Christian Ethos.

Subject Leader Profile 

At Wickhambreaux Church of England School, the RSHE curriculum is led by Mrs Bremner  in collaboration with class teachers and the Senior Management Team. Her reflective nature as a teacher with 20 years’ experience in a variety of schools and Key Stages both Internationally and Nationally, contributes to her belief of the importance of empowering children and educating them in health, relationship and economic education and wellbeing. Her experiences of co-ordinating subjects and managing a team in Hertfordshire, enables her to work with all key stakeholders to ensure that the culture and ethos of the school is encompassed by a spirit of tolerance, empathy and understanding of persity. Central to this is enabling class teachers to develop opportunities to ensure the range and quality of social, spiritual, moral and cultural experiences which students are able to engage within and outside of the curriculum, as well as working with Key Stages to develop age-appropriate learning experience.

INTENT

Through this, we believe children can develop the confidence, talents and skills to become effective individuals, motivated learners and active citizens in Modern Britain.

 We want to prepare our children for the future by encouraging the development of characteristics for life such as a love of learning, resilience, integrity, teamwork, critical thinking and independence. We want to prepare them for the world of work and support them in developing enterprise skills and financial awareness whilst fostering British Values underpinned by a Christian Ethos.​

IMPLEMENTATION

As a school we promote the use of ‘Growth Mindset’ and this, alongside our British Values underpin our PSHE curriculum. We also actively support our 'School Council' and this helps to promote our school ethos. 

Wickhambreaux Church of England Primary School uses a Primary RSHE scheme of work, Jigsaw PSHE ©, as a starting point to the curriculum and is supplemented by other materials, such as Stonewall, PSHE Association, Philosophy for Children (P4C) and other organisations such as NSPCC, RLNI and Narconon, to enhance and develop the skills and knowledge of our children.

The scheme of work and supplementary material establishes social and emotional aspects of learning within our whole school RHSE programme:

  • Our curriculum is built on children’s experiences and discussion. The unique sliding doors approach to decision-making supports in depth discussion of key life moments, ensuring children understand key concepts and are engaged in active discussion.

  • Our curriculum builds on skills previously learnt and is timed to match our pupils' needs. This sequencing and our use of specific age-appropriate concrete and digital materials mean that children develop an incremental skill set, designed to establish resilience and tools for life. Our pupil self-assessment journeys mean that our children can work towards clearly defined end points. 

Our framework for RSHE explicitly teaches the three strands — health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world, as well as the statutory aspects of the Relationships and Sex Education, and Health Education guidance. Our scheme of work also includes opportunities to link British Values and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development (SMSC).​

The distribution of weekly lessons complements enrichment opportunities throughout the year such as Anti-bullying Week, Safer Internet Day, Science Week and Sports Week. 

IMPACT

  • All schools in England must show how well their pupils develop in SMSC. As part of work in this area, our approach meets Article 2 for the Rights of the Child where they apply to every child without discrimination.

  • Effective progression of knowledge may be viewed in class workbooks, teacher reporting and in discussion records.

  • Our RSHE curriculum prepares pupils for all aspects of life. In particular, the resources we use mirror the new statutory elements of the curriculum and ensure that our pupils are ready for the transition into secondary school and adult life.

  • They gain qualities and attributes they need to manage their lives, fulfil their academic potential, and to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society, both now and in the future.
