To ensure equality for all, the staff, parents and children work closely together ensuring that the child is at the centre of all we do and that their holistic learning and well-being is considered throughout.

We recognise that every teacher is a teacher of SEND and accountable for the progress of all pupils in their class through embedding Quality First Teaching and the Mainstream Core Standards. We benefit from the expertise of Ms Redmond who, along with being our English Subject Lead, provides several interventions to support children experiencing challenges with reading: 

Reading Intervention (Specialised Literacy Lessons-SLL) support is provided for Year 1 and 2 pupils, who are finding it most difficult to keep up with their peers in class.  This highly effective intervention enables them to reach age expected levels within around 20 weeks of the programme delivery via a short series of one-to-one individualised literacy lessons.  This is based on the Literacy Lessons Designed for Individuals model, which is rooted in the extensive research of Marie Clay (2016) whilst also incorporating the school's validated synthetic phonics programme, Monster Phonics, to enable these pupils to 'catch-up' with their peers as quickly as possible.

We also provide The Better Reading Partnership (BRP) sessions, which serve as a boost to readers who are just falling a little behind their peers in class, in reading.  This is delivered by specially trained adult Reading Partners, reading with the children in 2 one-to-one sessions per week for 15 weeks and is loosely based on the Reading Recovery model.  The Reading Partners support specific reading strategies and closely monitor their children’s progress to ensure that the level of textual challenge is perfectly matched, thus enabling rapid progress towards becoming even better readers. 

Our Inference Training intervention is highly effective in supporting older children who read well, but require additional support with getting the full meaning and enjoyment from their reading. This programme is rooted in the research by Yuill and Oakhill (1988) and enables significant progress in reading comprehension abilities.   It is delivered in small groups of around 4 pupils, twice a week and lasts for 8-10 weeks. 

Mrs Maisey, our music specialist teacher, delivers music therapy and Mrs Barnes has completed the FSA level 3 Forest School qualification which enables her to run Forest School sessions for all children throughout the year. 

My role as SENDCO is to support the team in meeting the needs of all pupils through working collaboratively with all staff, pupils, parents and external agencies.
