Swimming and the national curriculum
Swimming and water safety is a statutory element of the national curriculum for physical education in England. This means that every child should leave primary school with the skills to keep themselves safe while enjoying swimming.
At Wickhambreaux all children in Key stage 1 participate in swimming lessons and water safety lessons delivered by qualified instructors to enable them to develop the following skills:
-
Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
-
Use a range of strokes effectively, for example, front crawl, back stroke and breast stroke.
-
Perform safe self-rescue in water based situations.
Wickhambreaux School give children the opportunity to continue with swimming lessons to develop required ability where appropriate.
