Puffin Class is home to our Year 1 children as they take the next exciting step in their learning journey. The transition from EYFS into Year 1 is a considerable one, but we make sure that our children continue to learn in a nurturing, supportive environment where learning is fun, purposeful and engaging.

Puffins are naturally curious, adventurous and resilient birds – qualities that we encourage in our children as they explore, discover and develop as learners. We want our children to be confident in trying new things, curious about the world around them and resilient when faced with a challenge.

A key focus in Year 1 is building strong foundations in phonics, reading, handwriting and number sense. We provide plenty of opportunities to practise and apply these important skills through practical, creative and enjoyable experiences, helping children to develop confidence and a genuine love of learning.

Mr Kent and Mrs Breeze create a caring and nurturing classroom where everyone feels valued, supported and encouraged to have a go. We look forward to a wonderful year of curiosity, discovery, friendship and fun as our children learn and grow together!

Latest Class News (updated 9/10/26)

What a busy week we have had in Puffin Class! In English, we have been planning, writing and publishing our very own plane adventure stories. We imagined which cities we might visit and which animals we could meet along the way, letting our imaginations take us on some exciting journeys! We even received our own toy aeroplanes and had great fun flying them around the playground, pretending to travel to faraway places.

In Maths, we have been comparing quantities of objects, using the language more than and fewer than to explain which groups have more or fewer items. In Mastering Number, we have been developing our understanding of one more and one less, thinking carefully about how numbers change when we add or take away one.

In History, we continued learning about Erik the Red and imagined ourselves in his shoes, writing persuasive notes to encourage others to join him in Greenland. We also had a go at writing our own names using runes, the alphabet used by the Vikings. In Art, we explored warm and cool colours further, using watercolours to create our own beautiful warm and cool skies. The children have shown such creativity and enthusiasm throughout the week. Well done, Puffins!

Well done to everyone who entered the inter-house remembrance balloon competition. All entries have been sent to the Royal British Legion for judging; hopefully there'll be some Year 1 winners from Wickhambreaux!
