Puffin Class

Welcome to Puffin Class!

Mr Kent
Class Teacher

Mrs Breeze
Teaching Assistant

Puffin Class is home to our Year 1 children as they take the next exciting step in their learning journey. The transition from EYFS into Year 1 is a considerable one, but we make sure that our children continue to learn in a nurturing, supportive environment where learning is fun, purposeful and engaging.

Puffins are naturally curious, adventurous and resilient birds – qualities that we encourage in our children as they explore, discover and develop as learners. We want our children to be confident in trying new things, curious about the world around them and resilient when faced with a challenge.

A key focus in Year 1 is building strong foundations in phonics, reading, handwriting and number sense. We provide plenty of opportunities to practise and apply these important skills through practical, creative and enjoyable experiences, helping children to develop confidence and a genuine love of learning.

Mr Kent and Mrs Breeze create a caring and nurturing classroom where everyone feels valued, supported and encouraged to have a go. We look forward to a wonderful year of curiosity, discovery, friendship and fun as our children learn and grow together!

Latest Class News (updated 4/9/26)

What a fantastic first week in Puffin Class! We have been so impressed with how brilliantly the children have settled into Year 1 and how quickly they have adapted to their new routines. We have been busy recapping all of the graphemes learnt in EYFS and practising our sounds, as well as developing our subitising skills. In Maths, we have been exploring ways to count objects carefully by moving them as we count, helping us to make sure we don't miss any out, and we have also been using tangrams to explore different shapes and create our own pictures and designs. In English, we enjoyed reading Harris the Hero, a story about a puffin, and wrote sentences about our heroes. In Science, we have been investigating forces and exploring how we can make toys move using a push, pull or twist. In Art, we have been looking closely at colours in nature. Our new topic is Explorers, and we have begun by thinking about where we would like to explore and sharing some of our exciting ideas. We have also loved spending time in the Riverside Playground, particularly enjoying the role-play area, water wall and sandpit. Well done, Puffins, on a fantastic first week!
This week's sounds: ss, zz, ff, ll, ck
Reading books and reading records start going home as of next week.
