Puffin Class is home to our Year 1 children as they take the next exciting step in their learning journey. The transition from EYFS into Year 1 is a considerable one, but we make sure that our children continue to learn in a nurturing, supportive environment where learning is fun, purposeful and engaging.

Puffins are naturally curious, adventurous and resilient birds – qualities that we encourage in our children as they explore, discover and develop as learners. We want our children to be confident in trying new things, curious about the world around them and resilient when faced with a challenge.

A key focus in Year 1 is building strong foundations in phonics, reading, handwriting and number sense. We provide plenty of opportunities to practise and apply these important skills through practical, creative and enjoyable experiences, helping children to develop confidence and a genuine love of learning.

Mr Kent and Mrs Breeze create a caring and nurturing classroom where everyone feels valued, supported and encouraged to have a go. We look forward to a wonderful year of curiosity, discovery, friendship and fun as our children learn and grow together!

Latest Class News (updated 18/9/26)

We have had another busy and exciting week in Puffin Class! In English, we imagined that our whole class had discovered an island and each contributed a funny or unusual idea about what might be found there, using nouns and describing words to bring our ideas to life. We then worked together to create a large class map of our imaginary island which you can see in our class gallery.

In Mastering Number, we have been exploring the idea of ‘5 and a bit’, looking carefully at numbers 6, 7, 8 and 9 and seeing if we can spot the 5 within each number. In Maths, we have also been learning about ordinal numbers and used toy cars to describe their positions in a queue, such as first, second and third. We then used number cards to play games including finding the missing card, using our counting skills, and practised comparing numbers using the language greater than and less than.

In Art, we have been learning about the artist Claude Monet and exploring how many different shades of green we can find. We created collage backgrounds this week, which we will build upon and develop further next week. In Science, we investigated how a push can affect water by experimenting with pushing water out of a bottle. We made predictions first and then tested whether a strong or gentle push would make the water travel further. As part of our Explorers topic, we thought about the different equipment an explorer might need in their backpack and discussed why each item could be useful.
